October’s TNT turned out to be another great night with 11 baristas competing and even more spectators than in September! Spruce Street Espresso made an impressive showing, taking all 3 top spots with Faith Ortiz claiming first place! Josh from Capogiro returned, as did Lisa from Milkboy. Spruce Street alum Charlie came out as well, and Brian & Courtney from Lovers & Madmen competed for a 2nd time as well. Molly, the newest barista at L&M, competed after only a month of pouring! Just goes to show, TNT isn’t just for well-seasoned baristas, and it is a new throwdown every month! November’s throwdown will test the ladies of Spruce Street in attempting to defend their wins…will you come out to give them a run for their money?

First Throwdown RESULTS!

Philly’s 1st official TNT was a huge hit! With 11 baristas competing, nearly as many spectators, and plenty of beer to go around, we all had a blast. Lovers & Madmen made use of their flat-screen TV to post photos of all barista drinks & scores in real-time, so everyone could keep up with the action. They also set up speakers with a microphone to allow for a play-by-play announcement of the action. Baristas came out from Milkboy, Spruce Street Espresso, Lovers & Madmen, Perk Coffee, Capogiro, and we even had a home-barista in attendance.

All of the baristas threw down some kick-ass pours, but the winning pour was the last of the night, by Kendra Sledjinski of Spruce Street Espresso. Faith Ortiz from Spruce Street also impressed the judges, earning her a 3rd place finish. 2nd place went to Brian Gelletly of Lovers & Madmen Coffee.

Thanks to Counter Culture Coffee, all of the top 3 winners took home some delicious coffee, and Kendra was given a T-shirt (thanks to Spruce Street!) as well for her first place finish. All pours were judged on multiple aspects including color, shape, symmetry, and overall aesthetics.

If you missed the first one, don’t make the same mistake twice. Our next throwdown will be Thursday, October 22nd, and the competition is sure to be even stiffer the second time around. We all look forward to seeing which Philly barista bangs out the best latte art!!

Our first TNT here in Philly is now set for Thursday, September 24th!! Phil Proteau of Counter Culture, Faith Ortiz of Spruce Street Coffee (and winner of this month’s TNT in New York!), and the staff of Lovers & Madmen are collaborating to put together the ultimate barista showdown for all of the talented baristas of Philly (and our neighbors outside the city). So start honing your latte art skills & get ready to bring it!!
